]]>

Every month for over seven (7) years now.

That’s how long I’ve been writing blogs for an ad agency in Phoenix … ReThinc Advertising and Public Relations.

I can remember my digital manager explaining to me the value of content. How my commentary on all things marketing would benefit the company’s organic search positioning. I wasn’t given a great deal of direction … just write and “do your best to make it relevant to what we do.”

OK … cool. I was a journalism major. I can do that.

Beyond a guest blog or two from an intern and an occasional masterpiece from my better half, I’ve had to come up with over eighty-some odd topics that compel a person to take the time to read what I wrote while also satisfying the amorphic search parameters that Google uses to control the universe.

Admittedly, I was more concerned about keeping the reader informed and entertained than I was enhancing our search position. This is readily evident when you visit the archives to read such riveting titles as Raisin’ Brand, Can I Yelp You, and of course, Up to Bot.

But it worked, and here’s where you really need to pay attention, as everyone wants to enhance their organic search position.

Optimize Your Content for Search, Keep it Engaging and Create Means to Distribute Your Content to Your Target Audience

Regularly infusing your website with relevant content that is properly optimized for search is one way in which you can improve your organic search rankings. Writing a blog about specific aspects of your business that a consumer may be seeking is one way of achieving that goal.

To me, writing for the sake of enhancing your search position is great, but it should be written in a way that perpetuates your brand’s voice while also engaging your target customer. In simple terms, if you’re an ad agency, write like an agency, or better stated, write with marketing expertise. This will engage your audience, compel them to read your content, and perhaps even share it. (hint, hint)

You can do your own sharing when you engage in off page SEO. Essentially, this means executing a robust email marketing campaign, posting your content on social media, and most advantageously, having another company share your content on their site with a backlink.

All these wins start with engaging, informative content.

How To Improve Your Content Strategy

A typical obstacle for many businesses is having someone who is willing and able to commit to writing content on a regular basis. This person must possess some level of expertise and the ability to articulate their thoughts in writing.

Simply put, not everyone is a journalism major.

A relatively new development has been the use of video content transcribed for purposes of search enhancement. Some people are more comfortable speaking to a camera than interacting with a keyboard. This works too, but I personally recommend that you utilize a professional videographer as nothing looks more unprofessional than a self-made propped up cell phone video. I’ll acknowledge a few exceptions and please, I’m not confusing the issue with good social content that you can shoot with your phone. I’m just saying that good video content should have some level of professionalism. If it doesn’t you can be compromising your brand instead of enhancing it.

Good content then becomes an opportunity for ad agencies like us. That opportunity, however, takes a significant amount of preparation to be done correctly. We don’t want to speak for a brand that we don’t know inside and out. To some degree, we must also become experts in your field. The ability to be accurate and genuine varies on the complexity of your business. Selling couches is much easier than writing about infertility issues or rehabilitation for addiction.

Lastly and probably most importantly, in order for your content to really be maximized, it must also be housed on unique pages on your website. So, if you have an aspect of your business that is readily searchable by your potential customers, it is a best practice to have a page on your site that has imagery and content specific to said services. The best example I can give you is a hunting analogy. If your company sells clothes specific to bowhunting in the desert, then a page with optimized content dedicated to that product is optimal. A blog on the subject is also beneficial.

Brands fall short when they “check the box” on content. This leads to content that is brief, unengaging, and not optimized for search. A page on your website that is not optimized nor supported with fresh blog content is more common than you might realize.

ReThinc Advertising Fills the Void for Brand Content Creation

So, what can a full-service ad agency like ReThinc Advertising and Public Relations do to help you get your content game in order?

First, we’ll have a detailed conversation regarding your business, your industry, and more specifically, your primary competitors. We’ll need to identify the brand attributes that compel your clients to engage with you while also understanding why you are better than your competitors.

We’ll then analyze your website to ensure it’s properly structured, optimized for search, and provides a solid user experience. We’ll also make sure there’s an appropriate place to post your blog content.

Next, we’ll look at your content strategy. What are you doing to communicate your message to both current and potential customers? Email is one component of that but so is social media. Public relations plays a role as well. In fact, PR can get us some of the important backlinks we talked about in paragraph ten.

Lastly, we’ll tie it all together to align with your marketing messaging. This will give your brand the cadence it needs to be its best. All it took was some guy with a journalism degree and a super smart digital manager.

Let’s pretend for just one moment you’ve decided to start your own company. You’ve got the knowledge to put forth a great product, the staff to provide stellar service and a location that’s going to bring you the traffic you need to make a healthy profit.

Now, all you need to do is come up with a name for your new company.

Easy right?

Not so much. Coming up with a unique, impactful and memorable brand name requires a great deal of creativity and lots of homework. The process starts with a deep dive into your industry, your business, your product, your background, and even your personal preferences.

Then the real work begins.

If you look at recent brand development trends you readily notice that the space is crowded. This is a product of our digital age – the ability for private parties to camp on URLs that they perceive to be valuable, the relative ease to register a trademark, and the sheer numbers of businesses that exist make the naming process extraordinarily difficult.

We love the challenge, and not to brag, but we’re getting quite good at it.

I would go on to say that as we’ve grown as a company so to as our ability to undertake and excel at bigger, more daunting tasks. None of which are more exciting or challenging than naming a start-up or executing a full re-brand for an established company.

Here are some of the brands we’ve “invented”. Some of which we’ve won awards for, all of which are successful.

HiBuddy Organics
Clear Mitigation
RUME Property Management
North&Co.
Invincible Fitness

Full disclosure, a couple of these new brands are still in the works but we’re far enough along that I don’t mind sharing them with you. The backend work for a new brand includes preliminary brand vetting, a URL search, and the work of a trademark attorney that solidifies all the protection you need moving forward.

We’re lucky that the English language is so versatile. You can drop a vowel, disregard proper spelling or run a couple of words together and still get a nice, memorable brand. (See RUME and HiBuddy) That’s the space we have to operate in as an ad agency.

Looking for a name for your startup or thinking about a complete re-brand with an entirely new name? Shoot me a note or give me a call to set up a time to discuss next steps.

At ReThinc, we don’t operate with a hyper-competitive mindset to outbid other ad agencies. The “win the account at all costs” mentality is in a word “unbecoming” and in two words “not necessary.” I’m going to forego sharing the three-word descriptive due to censorship issues.

We just don’t see our industry as one that requires that kind of negative energy. Yes, we deliver excellence to our clients with great vigor; But no we don’t compete for new business gladiator style.

Our reputation accounts for almost all of our new business and we tend to get most of the work we seek. We feel fortunate to have a widely varied portfolio of friendly clients that are great to work with.

NIGHT TERRORS FOR AN AD AGENCY OWNER

As the owner of an ad agency, what I do keep an eye on is the proliferation of DIY marketing that a potential client can access online. These web-based companies afford brands a wide array of marketing services. Everything from optimized websites, automated PPC, and graphic design can all be had with a few clicks of your mouse. They also have lots of money to market themselves and I’m seeing them with greater frequency in my feed.

“In my feed” is a new, cool way of identifying the media you consume. A very hip and oddly smelling hipster relayed this to me at a no-name coffee shop on my last visit to Seattle. I know, I know … I really shouldn’t talk to strangers but still, when in Rome.

I digress.

MY PARTY IS BETTER THAN YOUR PARTY…

Today, I can say smugly that I have little to no concern about competing with the quality of the product or service these online marketing companies provide. Better stated, it’s not a source of my most common night terror which involves a conspicuous make-up stain from Jennifer Garner on the shoulder of my new white shirt. How do I explain that to Stephanie?

Again, I digress.

Typically, DIY marketing companies operate “off-shore” and candidly, it shows. Often times, the work is done by what I’d like to call “less than qualified parties.” They also don’t sell the talent that is necessary to make the end product look as professional as it needs to. That is a very important point and that’s what makes competing with them with my party pretty simple at this point.

All that being said, DIY marketing is something more businesses are looking at and it poses a threat to my company. From the client’s perspective, they are getting the services they need at less cost. Unfortunately, they soon come to realize that the lower cost comes with a lot of other shortcomings as well.

So…quality and service wise, ReThinc runs circles around these companies.

WHAT THEY ARE BETTER AT

What ReThinc can’t compete with is the level of self-promotion these companies do to attract new clients. DIY marketing services are active on a number of fronts and their creative is usually pretty compelling, especially to someone who doesn’t think it through.

A BETTER MARKETING WORLD FOR EVERYONE

Look, progress waits for no man. I won’t be able to stem the tide of automated services in marketing or any other field. What I can do is continue to provide highly personalized, well-structured and properly executed ad campaigns that are effectively targeted to my clients’ most relevant audience. I can share my employee’s vast skills and knowledge to their benefit and actually SAVE them money on their outreach.

Now that deserves a big hug from Jennifer Garner. Want to learn more about how ReThinc Advertising provides the world with better marketing? Contact Ed at ed.olsen@rethincadvertising.com or fill out one of our highly personalized contact forms on our new website.

R-E-T-H-I-N-C … wait, shouldn’t that be a K?

As the owner of this Phoenix digital marketing agency, I’ve pretty much heard it all. From people thinking that we accidentally misspelled our company’s name (for 8 years now?) to others who for the life of them can’t pronounce the name properly because the C throws them for a loop.

I’m here to tell you that it’s all quite purposeful. You see any time you challenge the human brain to process information the ability to influence and retain said information is more pronounced (critical sentence alert). Spelling “thinc” with a C makes you think … making someone think is the first step in getting someone to act.

We always wanted to be different … from the way we created ads, to how we work with clients and even the internal culture that permeates our office. We say it on our website (so it must be true) and in our RFPs (so hell yes it’s true).

We are a different kind of ad agency.

The “C” is here to remind us of that. We will not and cannot be a normal ad agency. We don’t have a foosball table in our office nor do we consider that a way to be different. What we do have is a commitment to make our clients’ ads stand out in an extremely oversaturated marketplace. What we also have are new and different ad strategies that guide our clients to spending less money while being more effective with their advertising outreach.

A misspelled verb for a name doesn’t accomplish this. Or does it?

Just like brand positions sometimes you can achieve your goals in a subtle manner. Every day our valued clients are reminded that we are different by our work and exposure to our brand. The “C” reminds them (and us) that norms are to be avoided. Excellence can be achieved by being different. Whether that means you are showing the back of a realtor instead of their face, improving search results with enhanced brand outreach or creating an analytical dashboard to track online ticket sales activity for your venue… ReThinc endeavors to always be different.

If you want to “C” for yourself give me a call at 602-284-6722 or shoot me an email at ed.olsen@rethincadvertising.com.

Advertising is not getting any less convoluted anytime soon. I mean as the owner of a Phoenix advertising agency I see firsthand just how difficult it is to “differentiate your company from the competition while creating resonance with your target audience.” (Wait for it…)

As a branding agency in Phoenix, ReThinc Advertising will do everything we can to make all facets of your marketing execution as simple as possible. Simplicity starts with the basics. When you are advertising there is nothing more basic than creating a brand with a tagline that supports said brand.

Anytime we create a brand or execute a rebrand with a client we try and get ahead of the next logical step which is creating a tagline to “differentiate your company from the competition while creating resonance with your target audience.” (There it is…) We feel that a well-crafted brand almost always has a supporting tagline that helps to communicate the most important aspects of your brand position, ideally in a concise and memorable way.

Think of your brand as Batman and your tagline as Robin. Batman is totally good as a standalone but think of how much better he is with his ambiguously feminine sidekick Robin. Yet another potentially uncomfortable example would be thinking of your brand as Matt Damon and your tagline as Ben Affleck. Sure, The Bourne Identity is a decent movie but how much better is Good Will Hunting?

I think you get what I’m saying. Here are a few national brands with great taglines:

• Dollar Shave Club – “Shave Time. Shave Money.”
• Nike – “Just Do It”
• Apple – “Think Different”
• DeBeers – “A Diamond is Forever”

A tagline is integral in how your brand sells customers, reinforces strategy and positions your company amongst the competition. Being a boutique branding agency in Phoenix might keep us from working on the next Nike tagline but it doesn’t keep us from working on these very cool and unique brands:

• North&Co – “Real Estate by Trade”
• Austin Bates, Homeowner’s Financial Group – “Closing Loans. Opening Doors.”
• Washington Law Center – “We Fight, You Win”
• K O’Donnell’s Sports Bar and Grill – “Come for the Food, Stay for the Game”

When creating a tagline for a brand launch or rebrand you should focus on creating a message that is:

• Simple
• Positive
• Memorable
• Relevant
• Different

Different is a ReThinc thing. We feel that being different is an important part of a balanced marketing execution … especially when you are working in a competitive category. Too many companies get in the trenches with their competition which makes differentiation very difficult. For example, when you are a real estate brokerage and you are doing the same thing that every other real estate brokerage is doing, it’s hard to stand out.

Other obvious points include making sure your tagline is focused on the target audience and speaks to a key benefit the consumer will experience when they engage the brand. You don’t need to be a marketing super hero to know that.

If you are engaging in a brand launch or a rebrand and you want to talk to someone who’s not afraid to use the term “ambiguously feminine” in their blog outreach and perhaps maybe in your tagline, shoot me a call at ReThinc Advertising. Our number is 480-468-9588 and my email is ed.olsen@rethincadvertising.com.

Just for a drill, let’s think of a few great names in the local corporate world … names that encapsulate the essence of the business; names that differentiate themselves from their competitors and resonate in the mind of the consumer.

Is this a tough exercise for you? It was for me. I could think of plenty of ‘good’ names like Trader Joe’s, Bank of America and State Farm; but great names are much harder to come by. U-Haul, Lifetime Fitness, Home Depot and Netflix are what I would consider examples of great brand names.

When it comes to naming your company, it’s OK to have a grocery store named Fry’s or a laundry detergent named Tide because you invest in the needed components to build the brand. Those components are customer service, price point, product quality, and the advertising that promotes and reinforces these brand attributes.

Apple is a great name because it’s different from the sterile technology names that are so prevalent in the industry (IBM, Microsoft). Founder Steve Jobs is purported to have come up with the name because it was ‘fun, spirited and not intimidating.’ I think we can all agree now that he nailed it.

Here are some things to consider when naming your company:

1. Is it taken already? In Arizona check here to find out. Whereas you can have some redundancy in names, it is subject to rules regarding trademarks, services and locations. In almost all cases I would steer someone clear of using the same name of an existing company regardless of the circumstances.

2. How will it look? On a sign, on social media, across the internet … will it readily translate to memorable domain name?

3. Be unique. Brand differentiation is key in a crowded and competitive marketplace. Don’t get lost by looking like or sounding like everyone else.

Your company name is the foundation of your brand. It’s the core component from which everything else stems from. Whether you’re a startup or completely re-branding your company, you need to do your homework. It also doesn’t hurt to be a little bit creative as well.

At Rethinc … we are in the business of brand building. We devise the assets you need to put your brand forth in the marketplace.

Even the smallest business has a brand. In its most modest terms, a company’s brand can be represented by something as simple as its name. Brand building takes place when you develop more complex aspects of your business like logos, taglines, advertising campaigns, product offerings and customer service practices.

There are times when it’s necessary for companies to rebrand themselves. The reasons are too numerous to list, but primarily rebranding takes place when the consuming public is unaware of the advantages your company has over the competition. Re-branding can also be necessary when you make changes to your product or service offerings.

Another reason to consider rebranding your company is when you have established a negative brand image or occupy a disadvantageous position with your competitors. This common occurrence happens when you’ve fallen short on customer service initiatives or get out marketed by a competitor.

Rebranding does not have to be a complex experience. It does require that you assess the potential upside or downside of amending your established brand. It’s always beneficial to enlist the assistance of experts who will assist in making sure that your rebrand is properly executed. Often times the execution can be as essential as the substance.
